Value Stream Mapping

The Value Stream Mapping workshop is a three-day introductory workshop that examines an organization's material and information flows from raw materials to the customer. Through the Value Stream Mapping process, organizations learn where they need to focus their attention, and which Lean Solutions will be required to improve the overall value stream.

Many organizations try to implement Lean without first mapping their value streams. The result is point improvements that can actually worsen the flow of product through the organization. By examining the entire value stream, organizations can properly focus their efforts on removing waste in order to better serve their customers.

The first step in the Value Stream Mapping process is to separate products into product families. By grouping similar products thus, the complexity of an organizations product mix can be more easily managed.

The second step is to create a Current State Map: a visual representation of existing product and information flows. The Current State Map is used as a baseline for the improvements. Lean Principles are applied to the Current State Map to create a Future State: a leaner value stream that can be achieved in 6 to 12 months.

Finally, an Implementation Plan is created to schedule the improvements that need to be made to achieve the Future State. Resources are allocated and a timeline is created.

When the Future State is achieved it becomes the Current State, and the process is repeated. By repeating this process every 6 to 12 months, the Lean journey is more manageable and quantifiable continuous improvement occurs.

Like most Lean Solutions workshops, Value Stream Mapping combines classroom theory with practical exercises and case study simulations to reinforce the training. Workshop participants will complete a Current State and Future State Map for a case study company to reinforce the knowledge gained through the classroom sessions. This knowledge will then be applied to create a Product Family Matrix, Current State Map, Future State Map and Implementation Plan for one of your organization's value streams.

Objectives
  • Introduce Value Stream Mapping
  • Focus efforts on system performance rather than point improvements
  • Create a leaner Future State that is achievable within 6 to 12 months
  • Develop an Implementation Plan to guide your Lean journey

Agenda

Day One

  • Review of Lean Principles
  • Current State: A picture of where we are
    • Exercise #1: Case Study Current State
    • Exercise #2: Your Current State (continued on Day 2)
Day Two
  • Future State: A picture of where we want to be
    • Exercise #3: Case Study Future State
    • Exercise #4: Your Future State (continued on Day 3)
Day Three
  • Implementation Plan
    • Exercise #5: Your Implementation Plan
  • Workshop Summary

Typical Results

Value Stream Mapping workshop participants will have an enhanced understanding of the organization's Current State. They will also understand the steps required to remove waste from the Current State to create the Future State, and will have a documented Implementation Plan indicating the timeline and resources required.

Typical Future States indicate a lead-time reduction of up to 90%, with productivity improvements of 20-35%. Whether these gains are realized is up to the organization, but with a detailed Implementation Plan, you will possess the roadmap to get you there!

Who Should Attend

Although anyone can benefit from Value Stream Mapping, the door-to-door perspective is primarily management's responsibility. As such, this workshop is ideal for all managers, supervisors and team leaders. However, understanding the process is beneficial to all members of an organization.

Regardless of who attends this workshop, the results need to be clearly communicated to the entire organization so that employees understand the direction of the company and can contribute to its success.

Prerequisites

Most attendees should have some prior Lean knowledge. If Lean is new to your organization, consider starting your Lean journey with either Launching the Lean Initiative or Lean Principles. There are also several articles and books available on Lean and Value Stream Mapping which will give participants a good foundation. Check our website for articles and recommended readings.

What you Receive

As with all our workshops, each participant receives their own workshop binder so they can keep their own notes for reference once the workshop is over. Participants also receive a Certificate of Completion to show that they have completed a Lean Solutions workshop.

The materials from the workshop may be redistributed within the company. Many organizations choose to hold short training sessions using these materials so that all employees can view and understand a Value Stream Map. Additional workbooks are also available (call for pricing).

You also receive a 100% guarantee! If you are not satisfied either with the material covered or the teaching style of the workshop facilitator, there will be no charge! If we fail to meet your expectations, the only thing you will be asked to pay for will be the expenses incurred.

Workshop Follow-up

Although our workshops are designed to give the knowledge to you and your team, follow-up days are recommended to review progress made following each workshop. Typical organizations require one to two follow-up days about 2-4 weeks following the workshop. These follow-up days also help to ensure that the principles learned during the workshop are not forgotten or neglected after the workshop is over. If you are interested in a greater involvement by one of our expert facilitators, check out our On-Site Lean Implementation solution.

Pricing & Contact Information

The base cost for this three-day workshop is $9,500, which covers the first 15 participants. Classes larger than 15 participants will be taught by two facilitators and cost $16,000. In order to keep the class size manageable and to facilitate the learning process, Lean Solutions restricts the maximum class size to 30 participants. Follow-up days cost $1,500-$2,000 per day, depending upon the experience of the facilitator with a 10% discount available for long-term engagements. Expenses are in addition to the costs outlined above and include cost of travel and accommodation (if required) as well as meals and workbooks ($20 per participant).

Lean Solutions will tailor workshops to meet each company's requirements. Call or e-mail for more information or to schedule a workshop.
